Susy moved to Los Angeles in 2001 shortly after obtaining her BA in Environmental Studies and Resource Management from the University of Toronto. She started as a volunteer with Sustainable Works, then Business Greening Account Executive in 2002 and became Director of Green Business programs in 2007.  Along with four years spent working and studying in the UK and proficiency in Portuguese, French and Spanish, Susy carries a global perspective on sustainability issues. She helped develop and launch Santa Monica’s Green Business Certification Program in 2006. “Each business sector presents a unique opportunity to reduce their environmental footprint through simple infrastructure changes and employee education. My goal is for each employee to see their own impact at work – and then be inspired to reduce their footprint on the planet by changing a few things in their daily routine – while having fun!” Susy also helps administer the Sustainable Quality Awards program for recognizing green business leaders. She has greened over 500 companies and won two Santa Monica Chamber of Commerce Chairman’s Awards for her work in the business community. Susy became Co-Executive Director of Sustainable Works in 2014.

 

Gina Garcia

Originally from New York, Gina has lived in Los Angeles for so long she considers herself a native. Gina joined Sustainable Works in 2007 as an Outreach Volunteer and was also trained as a Volunteer Workshop Instructor. In early 2009, she became the Director of the Student Greening Program and supervised its expansion into the Los Angeles Community College District and broke participation records at Santa Monica College. In August 2010, Gina became the Director of the Residential Greening Program, a position which allows her to bring issues of sustainability to a broader segment of the Los Angeles Community. She added the role of Community Greening Program Director in 2013 coordinating mutlitple city wide communtiy events. Gina is an Advisory Board Member of Super Eco Kidz, a nonprofit environmental organization which educates children to care for the environment and themselves. In addition, she is on the Advisory Board of Climate Action Santa Monica (CASM), a local grassroots organization which moves people into action on Climate Change. Gina took over as Co-Executive Director of Sustainable Works in July 2014. In addition to directing the Residential and Community Programs she manages overall operations and is thrilled to have this opportunity to co-lead the organization in expanding its environmental education and action mission, while working towards building a more sustainable Los Angeles. Gina draws inspiration from her family and strives to be a model for her two daughters. She holds a BA in Speech & Theater from Montclair State University and a certification in Horticulture from UCLA.

 

 

Kaya Foster

A native of Santa Monica, Kaya developed a passion for community participation and environmental stewardship early on. Over the years, she has worked with numerous local organizations in various capacities to advocate for environmental sustainability and human rights by promoting compassion, communication and collaboration.  As a senior at UCLA, Kaya lead a student research project on the efficiency of the campus recycling program, and was hired upon graduation by Facilities Management to educate faculty, staff and students about waste reduction strategies and help dramatically improve UCLA resource recovery programs. She was a contributer to the first UCLA Zero Waste Policy and UCLA's initial Sustainability, Tracking, Assessment and Rating System (STARS) report. Before graduating Summa Cum Laude from UCLA with a B.A. in Women's Studies, Kaya attended Santa Monica College, where she was active in campus sustainability efforts and participated in the Student Sustainability Workshop Program. She's thrilled to come full circle with Sustainable Works and believes strongly that an involved person is a happy one! In addition to her role at Sustainable Works, Kaya also sits on the Santa Monica College Environmental Affairs Committee and Co-Chairs the Santa Monica College Ecofeminism Conference.

Tamsyn has been involved with Sustainable Works since her arrival in Southern California in 2006. A graduate of Syracuse University with a degree in environmental engineering, she worked for several years as an environmental engineer on transportation-related projects in New York City.  Prior to moving to Los Angeles she also lived in New Zealand, where she assisted the work of several environmental non-profits including the World Wildlife Foundation’s Climate Change Initiative project. Tamsyn has enjoyed many pristine natural environments in her travels, and she is working to ensure that many others will be able to share these pleasures for years to come.

Originally from Chile, Ivannia is a bilingual professional who is on a mission to live a life that supports the natural environment and improves the life of others. A believer that education is a strong pillar for change and personal improvement, Ivannia's feels Sustainable Works' mission is a perfect fit for her passion to make a difference in today and tomorrow’s  world.  Ivannia’s career spans from sales managing to customer service, and advertising.  In addition to a Masters Studies MS in Nutritional Science from California State University, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Food Engineering from the Catholic University of Valparaiso, Ivannia also completed the Recycling and Resource Management (RRM )Certificate of Achievement Studies from Santa Monica College in December 2015. The RRM program provided Ivannia with complementary knowledge and a new vision for conducting business in a sustainable manner while maintaining the core of growth and profitability.  Following her RRM certificate, Ivannia achieved the LEED Green Associate credential.
