The Sustainable Works Business Greening Program helps businesses increase resource efficiency and "green their bottom line". The program is FREE to Santa Monica businesses and will save money and time through increased efficiency and employee education.
Our program helps businesses:
- reduce and divert solid waste
- become water efficient
- eliminate toxic chemicals
- minimize transportation impacts
- reduce energy use
- and improve purchasing choices
We provide businesses with the tools they need to implement environmental actions and policies company-wide. We assess each business' current policies, commend them for existing behavior, recommend new options, implement the options they select and track success.
Pre-assessment questionnaires and on-site assessments give valuable insight about a business. Sustainable Works uses this information to make targeted recommendations. Sustainable Works then helps the business to prioritize and implement the recommendations they choose. We provide resources and cost information throughout implementation, provide employee education and follow up with the business to ensure success. Once the program is completed, Sustainable Works helps businesses receive recognition for their sustainable action.
Because senior management participation is essential to the ease and success of this process, Sustainable Works conducts an introductory presentation to engage key personnel from the beginning. Our presentation describes the program's benefits and explains exactly what participation entails.

- 75% achieved a minimum of 50% waste reduction
- 90% of those not already recycling implemented a recycling program
WATER EFFICIENCY
Water efficiency can mean everything from toilets to landscaping. Sustainable Works will help you identify where you can save water and save money!

- 80% of all recommendations provided were adopted
- 90% installed low-flow fixtures
- 75% reduced water use with savings ranging from 5-40%
TOXIC CHEMICALS ELIMINATION
Chemicals used every day in our businesses can have a very damaging impact on indoor air quality, human health and the environment. Today many non-toxic alternatives are equally as effective and can mean a big difference in the workplace and the world.
Some BGP participant successes:
- 50% of all recommendations provided were adopted
- 90% eliminated some or all of their toxic chemicals
- 80% are now purchasing less toxic alternatives
TRANSPORTATION IMPACTS
Businesses can play a major role in reducing the amount of vehicles on the road during commute time by supporting tried and true alternative modes of transportation. Also, by implementing a rigid maintenance schedule on fleets, businesses can reduce pollution while simultaneously saving on maintenance costs.

- 50% of all recommendations provided were adopted
- 60% increased ridesharing
- 85% display Big Blue Bus information for patrons and employees
ENERGY REDUCTION
Energy efficiency measures can have a significant impact on your bottom line and improve air quality in the southern California region and the planet!

- 35% performed facility-wide lighting retrofit
- 75% upgraded to energy efficient appliances
- 50% reduced energy use with savings ranging from 11-31%

Close the loop on recycling by purchasing recycled content and sustainable products. Purchasing environmentally-friendly products can create a demand for recycled goods, improve indoor air quality, and save valuable resources. Sustainable Works will provide resources for creating a sustainable procurement policy and finding sustainable alternatives to your current purchasing habits.
