Sustainable Works Community Program
Our Community Sustainability Program offers cities a turn-key solution to run their own series of sustainability themed events as part of a concerted effort to reach their sustainability goals. We help cities create, promote, and produce educational and interactive sustainability-themed events that encourage community members to adopt more sustainable practices and create more prosperous and resilient communities.
Community Events
Some of the more popular events we have held in the past included a Sustainable Fashion Show as well as People Planet Plate, a sustainable food event, a Sustainable Landscape Open House, and a NextGen Climate Summit. We continue to offer our annual Sustainable SM Student Poster Contest and the Buy Local Most Loved SM Businesses event. We’ve worked with the City of Santa Monica’s Office of Sustainability and the Environment since 2009 and have produced over 50 community events benefiting the City of Santa Monica and its various stakeholders.
Sustainable Film Series
Since 2014 Sustainable Works has screened over 34 environmental films and documentaries followed by engaging discussions with experts in the field and notable figures. These film screenings are more than just educational opportunities – we actively encourage community members in attendance to make pledges, adopt sustainable practices, and take action in their daily lives
Student Engagement
Sustainable Works engages students through workshops and events. Since 2008 we’ve produced the Annual Sustainable Student Poster Contest tasking students with investigating a theme of sustainability and demonstrating their knowledge and opinions in a hand-made poster. Reaching 750 to over 1,300 K-12 students per year, we provide in-class presentations to schools in order to share the principles as they relate to the year’s theme. The contest culminates in an Awards Ceremony and Celebration honoring all participants and winners.
Sustainable Works offers Student Sustainability Workshops (normally reserved for college students) to high schools. The Workshops bring 15 – 25 students together once a week for 6 sessions to explore issues related to key sustainability topics and the solutions they can adopt to reduce their environmental impact. Our workshops have been running in Santa Monica and Venice High Schools since 2014.

Keep the events coming. I always walk away with a better understanding of the topics and a path forward to help me make better decision to improve my life and its impact on the environment. Can’t wait for the next event.
Was really great, thank you for bringing awareness to this important topic. We need to vote with our wallet and make informed decisions as consumers given our politicians won’t.
More, these events are very inspirational and informative for us all to make positive changes in our lives.
I loved the film, and much appreciate the City’s efforts in bringing attention to matters as vital as our earth and all its living forms.
Keep the events coming. I always find new and important information and really enjoy the helpful action items to implement into my lifestyle. Thank you.
