Student Greening Program: Santa Monica College

About the Santa Monica College Sustainable Works Program:

The Santa Monica College Student Sustainability Workshops are a unique, peer-to-peer educational program where students learn about important environmental issues and the ways that they can incorporate sustainable practices into their everyday lives, improve their quality of life, and save resources while saving money. Student also learn about careers in the emerging green economy and the paths they can take to pursue them.

Each Workshop is made up of a group of 20 – 25 students who meet once a week for 8 weeks. The Workshops are structured around the exploration of the issues and solutions related to 6 key topics: water, energy, waste, chemicals, transportation and shopping/food. Guided by the Workshop Leader and the program text, the Sustainable Worksbook, students learn about the local, regional, and global environmental impact of their daily choices and the solutions they can use to reduce that impact.

The Santa Monica College Student Sustainability Workshops were first launched in 2002 to promote the college’s progressive sustainability goals as well as the goals of the Santa Monica Sustainable City Plan.  Since then the program, which is housed at SMC’s Center for Environmental and Urban Studies (1744 Pearl Street), has grown tremendously in size, scope and popularity and we are proud to list among our successes:

  • 9-12 workshops are offered each fall and spring semester
  • 500-600 students participate in the program each academic year
  • 50+ Student Workshop Leaders are trained and mentored to facilitate the workshops for their peers
  • Workshop participants contribute 2000+ volunteer hours to the community each academic year
  • Approximately 50 professors from 15 different academic disciplines support and promote the program
  • A significant percentage of program graduates become interested in pursuing green careers
  • 1000’s of sustainable behaviors are adopted by workshop participants, resulting in significant and continued conservation of resources
