Turning Trash Into Gas May Finally Be a Thing

At WasteExpo 2016, the annual conference of the National Waste & Recycling Association, some 600 exhibits fill three cavernous floors of the Las Vegas Convention Center. Gleaming garbage trucks are on display, along with scrap metal shredders, conveyor belt systems, and pumps for spritzing deodorizer onto fetid landfills. Video screens show trash being sorted or baled, compacted or pulverized, by machines that resemble oversize Tonka toys.

San Francisco Just Passed the Nation's Toughest Ban on Styrofoam

San Franciscans, bid adieu to Styrofoam. On Tuesday, the city unanimously passed an ordinance banning the sale of any product made from polystyrene, the petroleum-based compound that's molded into disposable dishware, packing materials, and beach toys—among other things. Even though it's commonly known as Styrofoam, that's just a name-brand owned by the Dow Chemical Company.

The Pacific Garbage Patch and landfills around the globe are overflowing with plastic waste, and you can circle the earth at the equator at least four times with all the soda and water bottles thrown away every year. But if an experiment from a Netherlands-based company proves successful, there could be a new use for all that plastic trash: road construction.
