Thank you for attending the documentary screening of The Street Project on October 23rd!
We had an great panel discussion with Colleen Stoll, Transportation Demand Program Manager at City of Santa Monica, Jeff Snyder, advocate for safe and cheap multi-modal commuting and Dylan Neumeyer, SMC Bike Club President. Cynthia Rose, Director Santa Monica Spoke and Co-founder of the Santa Monica Safe Streets Alliance moderated the panel discussion. As always, our goal is to educate and follow that education up with action. Here are action items you can take to have a positive impact on the issues brought up in the film. Please make a commitment to do something and share it with us; Post on Sustainable Works Facebook Wall, Tweet with our handle @sustainablework, connect at #sustainablesm or send us an email gina.garcia@sustainableworks.org
Take Action
1. Be an advocate for cycling projects. The City and state need to continue to build out the infrastructure so there are enough safe routes that more people ride. For more info visit Santa Monica Spoke.
2. Support making our Santa Monica’s Streets safer. For more info visit Santa Monica Safe Streets Alliance.
3. Learn more about and support Santa Monica’s Vision Zero Initiative to reduce severe traffic injuries and deaths on city streets by 2026. For more info visit Santa Monica Vision Zero.
4. Help build a stronger SM bike community by joining events like Kidical Mass or, if you are an SMC student, join the SMC Bike Club.
5. If you work in the entertainment industry, encourage those in charge to put actors on bikes instead of always in a car. Having them using a bike to get places will “normalize” the behavior.
6. If you have some power at work or in your community, make a point to be seen riding a bike. This gives social license to others that look up to you to do the same.
7. Be a courteous driver and show deference to cyclists and encourage your family & friends to do the same.
8. If you don’t commute by bike because of the long distance, consider using an electric assist bike.
9. If your main mode of transportation is a car, find opportunities to get out of your car and bike, walk or take public transportation.
